'We kind of got carried away with ourselves': Bono has apologised for the whole free album debacle

“Oops.”

YESTERDAY, U2 POSTED a video on Facebook in which they answered questions submitted to them by fans.

At first they just answered a few fun questions like, “Why don’t Larry and Adam have cool names like Bono and The Edge?” and engaged in some classic U2 banter.

Then came time to address the elephant in the room.

He then proceeded to sort of apologise and outline the rationale behind the release.

Oops. I’m sorry about that. I had this beautiful idea and we kind of got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing – drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, a dash of self-promotion.
And deep fear that these songs that we pored our life into over the last few years mightn’t be heard. There’s a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through.

TL;DR: their egos for the better of them.

This is the second such apology from U2 in a week. Last week, The Edge acknowledged in an interview that it may not have been the band’s finest hour and said that he understood why people regarded it as “an unwanted gift”.
